What are Direct Thermal Labels?

Direct thermal labels are made with a heat-sensitive coating on a paper or synthetic base. When passed through a Zebra direct thermal printer, the print head heats specific areas of the material to create the image. No ink, ribbon, or toner is required — just heat.

Will I need a ribbon to print onto these labels?

No. Zebra direct thermal printers do not use ribbons. The print head applies heat directly to the material, which darkens in response. Because the coating is heat-sensitive, direct thermal labels can fade over time, particularly if exposed to heat, light, or friction.
