What is a CLP label for candles?
CLP stands for Classification, Labelling and Packaging. Chemical classification and labelling rules communicate hazards associated with substances and mixtures. For candle makers, a fragranced candle or wax melt may contain ingredients which result in the finished mixture being classified as hazardous.
That does not mean every candle needs identical wording. What applies depends on the finished formulation and the substances and concentrations within it. Your fragrance supplier's safety documentation is therefore an important starting point when establishing the correct information for your own product. WHAT MIGHT APPEAR ON THE LABEL?
Common CLP label information
The exact content is product-specific, but where applicable a CLP label can include several types of hazard and supplier information.
Hazard pictograms
Where required by the classification, appropriate hazard pictograms communicate particular hazards visually.
Signal word
Where applicable, the classification may require the signal word Danger or Warning.
Hazard statements
Required hazard statements describe the nature and, where appropriate, degree of the identified hazard.
Precautionary statements
Relevant precautionary wording can explain recommended measures to minimise or prevent adverse effects.
Supplier information
Applicable supplier identification and contact information should be presented as required for your product.

No. The information required depends on the classification of the finished product, which can vary with ingredients and concentrations.
Do fragranced candles need CLP labels?
Fragranced candles can fall within chemical classification and labelling requirements where ingredients in the finished mixture trigger a hazard classification. Requirements depend on the formulation.
What information can a candle CLP label contain?
Depending on the applicable classification, information can include product identification, hazard pictograms, a signal word, hazard and precautionary statements and supplier information.
Where can I put a CLP label on a candle?
Candle makers often use the base or another suitable area of the container for secondary safety information. The label should fit securely and keep the required information clear and legible.
What size CLP label should I use?
